pencil

The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box.
"There are 5 things you need to know," he told the pencil, "Before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be."

"One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in Someone's hand."

"Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you'll need it to become a better pencil."

"Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make."

"Four: The most important part of you will always be what's inside."

"And Five: On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write."

The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

ever felt like talking to a complete stranger, or a new friend about your worries, your troubles, your insecurities and feelings? maybe it's the knowing that a stranger won't have prior judgements about you, and they won't try too hard to make you feel good. they won't base their opinions on previous occurences or memories with you. it's the momentary, new-found, non-commital trust that makes you comfortable to say things you would rather not say to a close friend.

sometimes it's disturbing to think like that. i mean what are close friends for if you can't tell them things?

but then again, maybe you could see it as the beauty of friendship. after all, the people who hurt you the most are true friends. cos minor actions and quarrels can open a gapping wound because they matter so much to you. that's why they're so cautious, that's why they're so careful about saying the right stuff so to make you feel better. this isn't superficiality. this is called helplessness in the face of the people you love most, because as they struggle to find the right words, struggle to feel YOUR emotions, it's pretty torturous as well. just that the distraught-you won't be able to realise such a heart-warming fact at that moment, that your friends are going all the way out to protect you.

this whole thing about the artficiality of friendships as we grow older and make new friends in the new phases of our lives disturbs me. i mean, what if the friends i really regard as TRUE friends see me as no more than a friend whom they have an artificial relationship with? so i think maybe, if we all stop evaluating the quality of our friendships right now (whether it's artificial anot), we could change the mindset that all these are just superficial. afterall, that's the first step to have a true friendship right? to start treating the other party as someone we can depend upon. then again...things aren't that simple, cos it depends on how the other party reciprocates.

okay so i have no conclusion. i just want to say i love you guys, for giving me such invaluable friendships i could never have asked for at the mere age of 13-16. if i look around me right now, i can see people who haven't had the chance to be part of such bonds at all. and the sad fact of life says...as you grow older, it's increasingly difficult to get such friends already.
